Welcome to the UKS2 Home Learning Page for the week beginning Monday 1st February.
Here is an overview of the lessons planned for the children at home and at school this week.
Maths
This week, the focus will be on decimals.
Monday’s lesson will be an Oak Academy teacher-led lesson which includes practical activities, worksheets and feedback.
A follow-up My Maths lesson is provided for Tuesday which includes some tasks within the lesson pages from which the children will receive instant feedback. They can revisit the lesson pages as many times as they need to (and use the practise version of the task) before submitting the ‘homework’ task for marking and feedback.
On Wednesday and Thursday, we return to Oak National Academy online lessons about rounding decimals. Sometimes, more than one worksheet is provided so that the children can select the one which best meets their needs.
Friday’s My Maths lessons and ‘homework’ task follows on from these sessions.
Monday: Ordering Decimals.
Tuesday: Ordering Decimals (My Maths)
Wednesday: Rounding Decimals (part one)
Thursday: Rounding Decimals (part two)
Friday: Rounding Decimals (My Maths)
If the children feel like an extra challenge, they can explore NRich which is a website that offers curriculum-linked resources to develop mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills.

English
We have decided to take a little less structured approach to English this week.
Lessons so far have required the children to focus on grammar and very specific features of writing. Before we begin our next unit therefore, we though they might appreciate something which gives them a little more flexibility.
In their 2Do lists this week, the children will find the following tasks:
Two reading tasks based on the text, 'I want my Mummy' which will complement their history lesson.
A task linked to their science lesson on the planets which will provide the children with an opportunity to respond by writing a story, a diary entry or creating a comic strip to describe their adventures as an astronaut visiting a planet in our solar system. They can draw on their scientific knowledge of the planets as well as perhaps the biography of astronaut, Chris Hadfield, to add detail to their outcome.
We will also expect the children to have completed the final draft of their Michael Rosen biography.
Details of these tasks will remain in the children's 2Do lists all week so that they can choose what and when they work on them.
Spelling
This week’s spelling focus are words ending in '-able.'
The children will be provided with spelling lists and supporting activities.
A challenge list and activities, based on the statutory Y5/6 spelling words, will be provided for some children.
Children who have been receiving intervention will be provided with appropriate spelling lists and activities.
We would be really grateful if you could support your child by completing a spelling test at the end of the week. These could be photographed and uploaded onto Purple Mash or Dojo.
Reading
We have now signed up for 'GetEpic' which is an award winning online library for children aged 12 and under. The children will have instant access to over 35,000 books in a safe child friendly environment without adds or in-app purchases. There are thousands of high quality books, audio books and learning videos available. The children's choices are logged, and suggestions of books will be made to them based on their previous reading. We will be able to make our own suggestions too and can use the service to support the home learning where appropriate.
Please could the children set aside a regular time each day to read a book of their choice.
Foundation Subjects
Science: Earth and Space
The planets are the subject of our science lesson this week. The children will be introduced to the name and features of each planet in our solar system and will learn their order based on their distance from the sun.
The children will be provided with a template to produce a poster that includes facts about each of the planets. If they would like to print the document, they could also colour their poster to give as accurate a representation of each planet as they can.
History: Ancient Egypt
The children have been asked to continue to explore the discovery of Tutankhamun’s tomb and a little of the knowledge we have around ‘King Tut’. The lesson includes a Power Point with links to a YouTube clip; a National Geographic video; a BBC clip; and a newspaper article to scaffold the children's learning.
They will be reporters and will submit a newspaper report about Tutankhamun. There will be a template available on Purple Mash should they wish to use it.
There is a great deal of information to process in this session and their ‘deadline’ will be in 2 weeks’ time – just before half-term.
If the children require any further information on this topic, they can complete some of their own research. They could use 'GetEpic' where they will find books and videos.
PHSE: Mental Health.
Children’s Mental Health Week is taking place on 1-7 February 2021. In recognition of this, the PSHE lesson will explore how to keep well and manage feelings. There are lots of practical ideas for how to stay physically and mentally healthy. It might be that the children develop a positive new habit as a result of this!
French: Places in a town.
This week, children will be learning nouns that start with a vowel sound and looking at different sentences about town. They will be illustrating their written activity and can choose to take a photograph of the location while out for their daily exercise if they would like to.
PE: Fitness
The children have been provided with a link to the new East Shropshire School Sports Partnership Channel where they will find a range of videos, recorded by the Idsall team, to help you to support the health and well-being of young people in your care, whether this is in school or remote learning. These videos aim to engage, motivate and maintain activity levels. The Y5/6 children will be following the Fitness lessons.
