Design and Technology
Curriculum Intent
At St Andrews C of E Primary School we aim to deliver a Design and Technology curriculum which inspires, challenges and reaches out to every child to allow them to be the best that they can be. Our aim is to equip children with a wealth of knowledge and skills that will empower them to experiment, invent and create their own plans and projects. Through the delivery of Design and Technology; they will become masterful at combining practical skills with the understanding of function and purpose. Our whole curriculum is shaped by our school vision together with our core values of Respect, Friendship and Perseverance we encourage children to meet the challenges of life ahead by fostering positive attitudes towards one another, acquiring knowledge and skills and promoting a life-long enthusiasm for learning.
Through our scheme of work we aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage pupils to become resourceful and develop skills to contribute to future design advancements. The National Curriculum outlines the three main stages of the design process as design, make and evaluate. Each stage of the process is underpinned with technical knowledge which encompasses the contextual, historical and technical understanding required for each strand. Cooking and Nutrition has a separate section with a focus on specific skills and techniques in food, including where food comes from and diet.
The National Curriculum organises the Design Technology attainment targets under five separate strands:
- Design
- Make
- Evaluate
- Technical Knowledge
- Cooking and Nutrition
The progression map shows a clear progression of skills and knowledge across these five strands across each year group.
